Frugally Feminine Apparel Series - Day One

The topic lately is “modesty”, “biblical femininity” and “how a Christian woman should dress”; so I thought that I would start a blog series giving suggestions and providing examples using my own wardrobe. One of the very first suggestions I will give is to consider making your own skirts and dresses. While it is time consuming for a beginner (like me) it is definitely worth it. You can purchase a fairly inexpensive basic sewing machine from retailers like Wal-Mart and Target. My husband bought mine from Buy.com (they offer free shipping). Second suggestion would be to start out simple and purchase inexpensive but good quality fabrics. Wal-Mart sells fairly inexpensive fabrics. I have a Hobby Lobby close by and prefer their selection over Wal-Mart’s (I buy what is on sale). If you are wondering about patterns, stores that sell fabric generally have a selection of patterns to choose from. I suggest patterns that use an elastic waist band as opposed to a zipper (until you are confident in your sewing skills).

If you are not confident in going the route of making your own clothing, then to create a modest wardrobe frugally (without breaking the bank) check out thrift stores, discount stores, consignment stores and if you can’t find these places, then shop the sale racks! Revamping your wardrobe doesn’t have to cost an arm and a leg, it just means you must refrain from impulse buying, and learn to buy clothing items that you can make more than one outfit from. There is nothing wrong with spending more on one item if you know that you can wear it more than once during the week by creating more than one or two outfits with it.

Through this new series I hope to give some easy and frugal ideas/tips for creating a truly feminine wardrobe. If you have any frugal or creative suggestions, please share them with us!

Today I wore a skirt that I made a few months ago (fabric cost me $3 a yard at Hobby Lobby: I used 2 ½ yards) paired with a pink shirt that I got at Wal-Mart for $5 and a nursing shirt underneath. (The pink shirt I would not consider modest without an undershirt.)

This is what I wore today and was able to do all the chores that needed to be done and I even ran around and chased my daughters. This morning I got the greatest compliment; from my 3 year old Sofia: “Mommy, you look like a princess…you a pretty lady”. If you think your daughters don’t notice or care about how you dress, you are very mistaken.

I will continue this series until I have exhausted my entire wardrobe so that you get to see what I wear and how I mix and match the items I do have, and if I find a good deal or sale, I will be sure to inform all my readers! Also, I will include any new sewing projects that I complete with all the “how to’s” so that you can recreate it if you so choose to.

“Strength and honour are her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come.”

Proverbs 31: 25
