As a Christian I am constantly seeking more wisdom as to what I should be doing. When Malachi and I were first married we stumbled across two sermons by John MacArthur that put both the role of a wife and husband in perspective. While reading I knew that these two sermons were very unpopular in our culture today. However unpopular they are a true description of both roles as seen through the eyes of scripture.
“The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: a good understanding have all they that do his commandments: his praise endureth for ever.” Psalms 111:10
As Christians shouldn't we seek all wisdom from God's Word, no matter how unpopular the answers are? As Christian women who strive to honor and please the Lord, shouldn't we seek only Him for wisdom? I know many women who profess with their mouths that they are Christians, yet their world view, the way they live out their lives, and their positions on the essential doctrines do not line up with scripture. I also find living in the South, although we are considered the “Bible Belt”, is one of the toughest places to witness or even speak about God with other professing Christians. This is quite sad in my opinion.
The South is plagued with many people who claim to be “saved” but by their actions show no fruit of that salvation. I hear things like, “Well I said the sinners prayer”, or “I know that I am saved so it doesn't matter what I do”. I also hear “You aren't supposed to judge me, only God can do that”. They are correct in that only God can truly judge as He is the only One who can judge the heart. However, as Christians we are called to make right judgments according to scripture. We are also told to judge ourselves in the same manner we judge others. We are to make sure we are right with the Lord before exacting judgment on another. (Matthew 7) By what standard do you judge your own life by?
In my own life the standard is Jesus Christ. The place where I learn how I am to live my life in honor of the Lord is His Word. There are right judgments and wrong judgments. And we all should make sure that we are judging according to Christ's standard and not our own personal preferences.
So back to the role of the husband and wife. I have posted on my blog these two sermons by John MacArthur. I often come back to them and read them to make sure I am living my life in harmony with what God says my role is. Society, as we all know, has a completely different role for women to fulfill. I encourage you all to read what John MacArthur has to say. Also do your own research and prayer. There are many resources available to check the Hebrew and Greek translations to make sure you understand the context of each scripture that is being quoted. This is a good practice for any article or sermon you read or listen to.
