Wise Counsel

“Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked or stand in the way of sinners or sit in the seat of mockers.” Psalm 1:1

When you have a problem that needs to be solved where do you go for “counsel”? If you are in a tough season in life, who do you turn to for “counsel”? If you need to make a decision on a particular thing in your life, who do you trust for “counsel”?

Scripture has given us many warnings about going to the wrong people for help. Psalm 1:1 tells us that we are “not to “walk” in the counsel of the wicked, or “stand” in the way of sinners or “sit” in the seat of mockers.” Do you notice the progression of events in that one verse? It gives us a great example of what “can” happen when we begin to “walk” in the counsel of people who are not Christians. After walking with them, we get to a point where we stop and stand with them and once we have started standing with them, we move on to sit with them. Notice it doesn’t say that we get back up and walk away. It shows that once you place yourself under the counsel of people who do not love the Lord and His commandments you will inevitably be sucked into “staying” within that counsel. This friend is a dangerous place to be.


What should we do then? Who should we turn to when we need counsel or guidance? Proverbs 19:21 gives us the answer:

“Many plans are in a man's heart, But the counsel of the LORD will stand.”

This one verse sums it all up into saying that we need to seek the counsel of the Lord. To do this we must daily spend time with the Lord in His word. The first place the Lord will speak to His children is through His word. The only way for His children to hear from the Lord is to be in His word. So the responsibility to seek out wise counsel is on us. To all of life’s questions the first thing we should ask ourselves is “What does God’s Word say about this?” I truly believe that if all we all did this each time we had a question or problem it would eliminate frustration and confusion.


There is nothing wrong with seeking the counsel of others. However, we must be mindful of who we go to. Christians should not seek the counsel of an unbeliever. The unbeliever is living their life by a whole different set of rules that are in contradiction to God’s Word. Make sure the people you receive counsel from love the Lord and have submitted themselves under the authority of God’s Word.

I pray that I always remain on guard for those who would give me ungodly counsel. I pray that I will always set God’s Word above the respect of any of man’s knowledge.
